Clash of the Canadiens
Montreal sports radio station TEAM 990 is reporting that there may be a major rift in the Habs’ dressing room, which opened up when Andrei Markov called out goalie Carey Price following last week’s OT loss to St. Louis.  According to the radio station, Markov told Price, “If you are not going to play with heart, stay home.  We don’t need you here.”  The players then...

Ketchup: Auger/Burrows, Cujo, Fleury
Touching on some of the bigger stories of late: The Auger/Burrows fiasco: during the now-infamous conversation between referee Stephane Auger and Canuck forward Alex Burrows before a Nashville/Vancouver game last week (?), Auger probably told Burrows that he was upset and embarrassed by Burrows’ faking an injury that led Auger to eject an opposing player the last time the two teams met.  The...

An elbow to hockey's chin
Right now, the QMJHL is wishing that Patrice Cormier, forward for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, had never gone to the World Juniors.  Cormier gained a lot more name recognition from the tournament in Saskatchewan, and that’s why the hockey world is buzzing about the vicious elbow he planted in the face of Quebec Remparts’ defenceman Mikael Tam. Check out the video here.  At 1:01, watch...

Lasers: not just for Stormtroopers anymore
During Saturday night’s Flames vs. Canucks game in Vancouver, some simpleton in the crowd thought it would be clever to aim a laser pointer at Calgary goalie Miikka Kiprusoff’s face all night.  Somehow, cool-as-a-cucumber Kipper managed to largely ignore it and lead the Flames to a shootout win, but that wasn’t much consolation to coach Brent Sutter. “It was going on all...

Fleury flames the Flames
For a time there, it looked like the whole world was on Theoren Fleury’s side.  He kicked a substance addiction to almost come back to the NHL, and looked heroic even though he fell just short.  He admitted that he had been sexually abused by his junior coach, and that revelation triggered an outpouring of sympathy and admiration from hockey fans everywhere.  It seemed as though despite all...

Nailbiting finish at the WJHC
Team USA walked away with the World Junior gold tonight, after the Canadians stormed back with two goals in the final few minutes of the third to force overtime.  The silver for Canada means that their streak of gold medal finishes at the WJHC is stopped at five; likewise, the ridiculous TSN montages that proclaim this group of 18- and 19-year-olds to be heroic, god-like figures can stop as well. ...

Team Canada B
A lot of questions were being asked last Wednesday after Canada’s men’s Olympic hockey team was announced, as many wondered why certain players didn’t make the team.  The bottom line is that as with any other national hockey team, there are always several players who are right on the brink; Canada just has too much top-end talent to fit it all on one team. After close...
